- Dallas Cowboy running
- back Emmitt Smith has
- done a lot in a short time.
- He has won three rushing
- titles in just five NFL
- seasons. He is the first running back to win a
- rushing title and play in the Super Bowl in the
- same season. He is also the first running
- back to win a rushing title, the regular season
- Most Valuable Player Award, and the Super
- Bowl MVP trophy in the same season!
-
- It seems that Emmitt has been on a fast track
- for a long time. In his four years at Escambia
- High School, in Pensacola, Florida, Emmitt
- gained 8,804 career yards. He is third on the
- all-time rushing list in the National High
- School Sports Record book. In his
- senior year, he was named Player of
- the Year by USA Today
- and Parade magazine.
-
- Emmitt was recruited by
- several colleges, and
- decided to attend the University of Florida.
- There, in just the seventh game of his
- freshman year, he passed the 1,000-yard
- mark in rushing. That was the fastest anyone
- had rushed for 1,000 yards in the history of
- college football. In his three seasons at
- Florida (he left after his junior year), Emmitt
- became the fifth-leading rusher in the history
- of the Southeastern Conference, rushing for
- 3,928 yards and setting 58 school records.
-
- But even with his impressive record, many
- pro football scouts didnΓÇÖt think he would
- make it in the NFL because of his height
- (heΓÇÖs only 5' 9", which is
- short for the pros) and
- average speed. Sixteen
- teams passed on him in
- the 1990 NFL draft, but
- the Dallas Cowboys recognized his talent and
- signed him.
-
- With the Cowboys, Emmitt won three straight
- rushing titles (1991-1993). He became the
- first player to have back-to-back seasons of
- 1,500 yards or more since Walter Payton. In
- Super Bowl XXVII, in 1993, Emmitt rushed for
- 108 yards on 22 carries and scored one
- touchdown, helping the Cowboys win 52-17.
- In Super Bowl XXVIII, in 1994, Emmitt rushed
- for 132 yards, scored two touchdowns, and
- was named the gameΓÇÖs MVP.
-
- Emmitt still spends lots of
- time with his family (he
- has three brothers and
- two sisters) in Pensacola,
- Florida. Although he has
- achieved a lot by the age of 25, Emmitt still
- has big plans for the future. He hopes to
- break the NFLΓÇÖs career rushing record of
- 16,726 yards, held by Walter Payton.
